Background
Dr. Connie Carter is a Professor in the Faculty of Management at Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC, serving as intellectual lead for law in the MBA and BCom programs. Connie also teaches International Law in RRU’s MA program in Human Security and Peace-building and is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria. Connie earned her PhD in Law and LLB degree at the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), University of London in the UK. She is a Barrister, of Lincoln’s Inn. Her first degree was in Education, a B.Ed., from the University of Cambridge. She has held senior positions in the business and academic worlds in Europe and Asia. She has operated her own business consulting companies advising on legal aspects of international trade, foreign investment, marketing, technology transfer and intellectual property in Europe, China, India and Southeast Asia. Before joining Royal Roads University, Connie spent five years in Xiamen, China, partly as Professor of Law at Xiamen University, partly as Human Resources & Public Affairs Director at the China subsidiary of a leading multinational producer of heavy machinery. While practising law in London, England, she taught Intellectual Property Law on the inter-collegiate LLM program in the University of London and Law & Development in the undergraduate program at SOAS, University of London. As a Visiting Professor, she has taught International Trade, Competition, Chinese Law and IP Law at several universities, including Chulalonghorn in Bangkok. Her publications include: IP Courts in China: Myth or Reality? (2009); Eyes on the Prize: Law and Economic Development in Singapore (2002); Fighting Fakes in China: The Legal Protection of Trademarks and Brands in the PRC (1999). Her research interests include special economic zones (SEZs) in emerging market economies, corporate social responsibility in multinational enterprises, foreign direct investment (FDI), law and development, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
